ATCHISON, Kan. -- Lara Moritz has been going "On The Road" again this year to find inexpensive vacations for the family.
This week, she visited Atchison, Kan., which is the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to attempt flying around the world. The house in which Earhart was born has been transformed into a museum, showcasing various items and pictures.Earhart spent much of her childhood living with her grandparents in the home."She stayed here longer than any one place the rest of her life. Because after here they moved to Des Moines, and that was the beginning of many moves," museum curator Louise Foundray said.
I have a comment about the Globe on Facebook saying that the commissioners are considering putting Project Concern up at the Herritage Conf. Center. I totally disagree. You know, I think alot of older people like having Project Concern in town. If it's moved, I wouldn't think they would readily drive over there, especially in the winter. They just aren't going to tackle that hill. Just because the Herritage Center is empty it's not a reason to up and move an established business. it's another dinasaur that I think needs to have NEW establishments moved there, not just move existing places around because it needs tenants. Plus, there would be another empty building in the downtown area. To me, the building isn't good for much except it's a place for weddings every once in awhile and they have the rotary meetings and such, but I'm sure they could find another place to meet if they had to. I would think it would cost alot to heat and cool and upkeep for just those few things that go on there. I vote NO for the moving of Project Concern or any business for the purpose of filling up an empty space and leaving another empty space behind. Does not make sense to me.
ReplyDeleteThe city is challenged by ongoing cost of city buildings. We need to study how we could consolidate some of the cost in the future. The conference centers viability is currently being studied. It has been discussed that excess space could be used for other functions. Project Concern has been discussed. The only way this could happen if the patrons of the Project Concern would agree. The space and parking at the conference center would have to be reworked. The Project Concern patrons would be a viable part of the planning. Actually they would have a nicer place. This would only happen if the Project Concern patrons would agree.
